Shelter site redesign

Concept Redesign for a Shelter in Need

Redesigned Wilco’s website to improve information architecture, mobile UX, and branding. Deliverables included a style guide, streamlined navigation, and high-fidelity mockups for desktop and mobile.

The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter (WILCO) is dedicated to providing a safe, compassionate haven for pets in need.

The problem

Wilco’s site was difficult to navigate and failed to highlight the shelter’s animals effectively.

The ask

Redesigned Wilco’s website to improve information architecture, mobile UX, and branding.

Process

Competitive & Internal Audit

Analyzed key competitors (Austin Pets Alive!, Austin Humane Society, Austin Animal Center) to identify opportunities for Williamson County Animal Shelter.

Focus areas included:

  • Information architecture

  • Styling

  • Presentation of pets

Information Architecture

The existing information architecture was broad, overwhelming, and lacked logical grouping—making navigation harder than competitor shelters.

The existing information architecture was broad, overwhelming, and lacked logical grouping.

Styling

The existing style was outdated, hard to read, and didn’t utilize space well. Updated the styling, including the color scheme, logo, and typography.

Eliminated unnecessary information from the high level animal card (ID number, generic breed and size information) and updated the styling.

Deliver

The new design is live!

Now, we focus on expanding the archive, ensuring it remains a lasting, ever-growing resource for both today and future generations

Before

Streamlined navigation with grouped categories (e.g., services, lost & found, training & resources).

The initial state was functional but lacked the visual appeal and emotional resonance it deserved.

After

MVP includes updated icons, colors, typography, information architecture and repeatable page template to expedite iterations and increase the site’s scalability as it grows.
